"Thus says the Lord, 'Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths,
Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls.'
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’" Jeremiah 6:16
These days, it seems that humanity is moving at nearly the speed of light. There are technological advances announced just about every day. New developments in medicine, health, electronics, communication, transportation, business and education boggle the mind compared to what was available just 10-15 years ago. As a result, there is an increasing appetite for the newest and latest thing when it comes to just about everything we need and desire. Those who are first to the market with their offerings typically are greatly rewarded, which in turn speeds the cycle even faster.
This can cause the older among us to say "Whoa. Slow down." We become nostalgic for the simpler times and ways of yesteryear and wonder if the world has forgotten about the things that are really important like loving God, loving your neighbor, taking care of one another, hard work and being kind. We wonder what happened to morality, common sense and just trying to be the best people we can be.
Beloved, these are not new musings. In 626 BC, the prophet Jeremiah was called into service by God. He was charged with preaching and prophesying to the people of God regarding the dark future they were bringing upon themselves. It seems that the God's own were not satisfied with the tried, true and righteous, but instead ran to new and different "gods" and the pagan and idolatrous behaviors that accompanied their worship. These things were preferred by those who should have known better. For as many warnings that were delivered by many prophets, the people were more interested in the latest than they were in what was right and who had fed, freed and sustained them in the midst of all of their enemies.
As we look around today, we might see the same things that Jeremiah saw and lamented. Like Israel, we are being warned. Like Israel, we have a choice. Like Israel, God loves us and desires the ultimate good for us. There is nothing wrong with technology, new methods and new thinking, but we must use these things for good and continue to adhere to the same message. We must not allow ourselves to be carried off by pursuit of the new, bright and shiny things that only appear to be Light but lead ultimately to destruction. Instead, let us follow the ancient path. We know exactly where and to whom it leads.

GPS 1/27/2014
"This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Josh 1:8-9
One of the greatest pieces of technology to come along in a great while is the GPS (Global Positioning System) By acquiring a device that connects with satellites orbiting the earth, anyone can determine where they are just about anywhere on the planet within about 3 feet. More importantly, if a person needs to get from where they are to where they want to be but do not know the way, simply type in the destination and the GPS system will trace out a path to get them there by the shortest route possible, as long as the directions are followed.
Technology that precedes the GPS that we know today is the GPS (God's Positioning System) that has always existed. It was the system that Abraham used when he left Macedonia to get to the land promised to his descendants. It was the system that the Hebrews used to escape both Egypt and the slavery they endured there. Unfortunately, they decided to stop using their GPS just as they approached the land promised to them. This resulted in them becoming "lost" and wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.
Beloved, GPS is still available to us today. It is known as the word of God. We are encouraged to read it and study it every day. In it we find truths such as, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105) and "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding but acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will make your paths straight," (Proverbs 3:5-6). Further, we are told that it is strong enough to be able to be relied upon and firm enough for us to draw strength from it. The added benefits are that we will be successful in our godly endeavors and prosperous in our lives.
Joshua, one of the two Hebrews to advocate for staying the course according to their GPS 40 years earlier during their original trip to the promised land was ultimately given leadership of the people and commanded by God to always adhere to its directions upon their second approach. Joshua did just that. It turns out that he was strong, courageous, successful and prosperous in leading the people into their new land. We likewise have a heavenly promised land. Let us be sure to follow our GPS all the way there.

The Right Way 1/24/2014
"So Jesus said to them again, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.'" John 10:7-10
If there is one thing we Americans like, it is choice. We want to have as many options as possible. Even among these options, we want to have the ability to customize so that our choice would be as unique as possible. Our choices are a means of self expression and it is not unusual to pursue them vigorously. Sadly, this is true of our religious preferences as well. So often we choose religions, denominations and churches based more on how they make the word of God conform to us than how they help us conform to the word of God. And while this is not about what denomination or church is "right," there is a right way.
Jesus spoke thousands of years ago about the motives of those who would come to lead God's people. Many of them were false teachers, false prophets and leaders with questionable motives. It is these he refers to as thieves. Paul addresses the "believer's" side of this same coin when he says, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths" 2 Timothy 4:3-5.
Beloved, it is critical that we find the right way and stay in it. There is one voice and one truth that believers must recognize and follow. Far above and beyond the voice of an earthly minister, teacher, elder or theologian, we must draw near to the voice of the Lord. Consider this: "God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world," Hebrews 11:1-2. In Matthew 17:5, we are literally instructed by God to listen to Jesus, His own son in whom He is well pleased. Finally, Jesus says of himself, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me," John 14:6.
There are many voices and many paths but there is only one that leads to salvation and the eternal life that it provides. Choose the right way.

Seeking Wisdom 8/16/2013
"Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
And apply your mind to my knowledge;
For it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
That they may be ready on your lips." Proverbs 22:17-18
Think about all of the many influences on our thinking and how we interact with the world. We are constantly inundated by songs on the radio (or from our music collection), the opinions of pundits on the news, television shows, movies and across the back fence chat. Think harder about how much of that we seek and why we do so.
The book of Proverbs is primarily a collection of wise sayings written by Solomon to his son. In it, he both advises that he avail himself of the godly wisdom he shares and then conduct himself according to it. This is still great advice for us today. It was Jesus who said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’” Matthew 4:4. This elevates the Word of God from interesting information to that which is necessary for life.
Beloved, it is important that we are aware of what goes on around us. It is ok to seek entertainment and participate in community activities. It is necessary that we communicate with each other and with our neighbors. The advice today, however, is that we make seeking the wisdom of God a priority in our lives. And we need to know that it is available just for the asking (James 1:5). If we would seek out wisdom and apply it, not only will our lives be enriched but we will then be in a position to pass it along to others who may be in need of it.

Walking, Standing and Sitting 7/2/2013
"How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night." Psa 1:1-2
Though we are taught not to judge unrighteously, you can tell a lot about a person based on how they spend their time and the company they keep. It is easy to claim what we are all about, but unless our audio matches our video, all we are engaged in is image management. Depending on the difference between what can be observed and what actually is, that can be a full time job.
Consider the implied admonition of the Lord. What is walking but our manner of living? When we are encouraged to "walk in the light as He is in the light" in 1 Jn 1:7, we are being instructed to live our lives in a godly manner. We are encouraged to be holy as God is holy. To walk or live according to the ways of the unrighteous is to walk the path to destruction. Wickedness is all around us and it is easy to get caught in the current of what society not only approves, but will persecute as it relates to any lack of conformity to its deteriorating norms.
We are also encouraged to be mindful of where we plant our flags. Our position on certain issues often define us more than anything else. We must ensure that we are correctly positioned concerning things like abortion, abuse, sexual orientation, fornication, fidelity, gossip, morality and the love of money among many others. It unfortunately is not unusual for the people of God to allow for positions that are inconsistent with his word. Where we stand should be determined by looking up rather than down.
And what is it to sit but to be found resting? By the time we have found our seat, we have found our home. This is indicative of having chosen a position and course and being content with it. If we have chosen to be godly, it will manifest itself in all we say, think and do, likewise if we have chosen to be ungodly. Our walking and standing can land us in the potentially dangerous and permanent arena of sitting.
Beloved, God has promised blessings (the ultimate happiness) for those who avoid unrighteous walking, standing and sitting by being found living according to His law. This is achieved by applying as much of our attention to His word as we do much lesser pursuits such as watching the news, sports, our favorite television programs or favorite music. Salvation is found in none of these things, but true blessings are found in living life according to the word of God. We need not be dragged down by society but must fulfill our mission of raising society up. This can only be done if we are properly positioned and engaged in proper pursuits ourselves. He has laid out the path for us. Let us walk it earnestly.

The Good Old Ways
“Thus says the Lord, 'Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls.' But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’" Jer 6:16
God was angry with His people, in this case, the people of Judah in particular. Despite all of the many times that God had come to their aid after they got themselves in trouble through disobedience, they turned to idolatry time and time again. He sent His servant Jeremiah to give them one last warning that harsh punishment for their rebellion was imminent. It is important to know that this warning was not to the peoples of the earth at large but to the people that God called His own.
Today we are exasperated when we look at the condition of the world. We are constantly faced with the effects of corruption, immorality, strife, hatred and godlessness. And while this can be seen throughout the world, what can be seen among the people of God? Unfortunately, all of the above can be found inside the church as well. While it is important to understand the source of illness in the body; however, the priority is always to seek first the cure.
Beloved, we tend to pursue new ways, new understanding and new interpretations of what God has always told us, but not all that is new, shiny and technological is good. The word of God and the instructions it contains for how we must live our lives is ancient. And of His surpassing existence and nature we must understand that, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" James 1:17 (NIV). When we stray from God's way, we leave the path He has lit and laid out for us from the beginning, and stumble into darkness. This most tragically takes place among those God calls His own and we are utterly without excuse.
The cure for this malady is simple: "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it" Matt 7:13-14. Let us emulate David who said, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn and I will confirm it, that I will keep Your righteous ordinances" Psa 119:105-106. The word of God is the true way and the true path. Let us be sure to follow it.

Safety and Security 4/5/2013
"Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." 2 Pet 3:17-18 (NIV)
What comes to mind when we think of security? It could be anything from a simple feeling of safety and well being to the men and women that protect the President of the United States and other dignitaries. The reason that such a concept exists is because threats and danger exists.
The apostle, Peter, raises our attention by outlining both threat and assurance. He states, "Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, 'Where is the coming he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation,'" 1 Pet 3:3-4. Here he reveals that people will not only lose faith, but contribute to others doing the same. As a result of this distraction, people will return to the unrighteousness and its accompanying ways from which we were saved. He provides assurance by reminding us that any delay in the coming of the Lord is a gift from God designed to give us time to receive salvation. This is accompanied by a warning that not everyone will want to see the coming of the Lord because of the destruction it means for those who have not heeded. The advice is then to remain faithful, diligent and steadfast in order that we be not lost.
Beloved, we do not have to look far to see the things that Peter predicted some 2000 years ago. Verification is seen in every headline, on every news and entertainment channel and in the very lives of our friends and neighbors. The cause of Christ is under literal and constant threat with people co-opting it, attacking it or perverting it to accommodate their own evil lifestyles; however, security is available to the obedient believer. Christ died for our sins that we might be adopted into the family of God. Within the family, within the household and economy of God, is safety and that, eternal. Let us heed Peter's ancient advice and not allow ourselves to "fall from our secure positions." Jesus said,
Remain faithful until death and you will receive a crown of life" Rev 2:10. We have been warned.

Seeking the Old Path-6/28/2012
"Thus says the Lord, 'Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls.' But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’" Jeremiah 6:16
There is an old saying among preachers and biblical teachers that states, "If it's new it ain't true and if it's true it ain't new." Perhaps they are borrowing from the writer of Ecclesiastes when he said, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, 'Look! This is something new?' It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time" Eccl 1:9-10.
As a society, we are obsessed with the newest, latest, greatest thing from news and information to technology to gadgetry. Who among us does not have or want the latest cell phone for example? More relevantly, people are constantly developing new philosophies of God (or god figures), religion and worship. Should you ever have the time or interest, look up "religions" like Creativity Movement, Nation of Yahweh, Church of All Worlds, Universe People and the more well known Church of Scientology. Though these organizations are easily dismissed (despite the growing number of adherents to some), far more dangerous changes are being made in churches all over the world today. One example of this is in 2003, the Episcopalian Church of the United States of America became the first mainstream religious organization to consecrate an openly gay non celebate bishop (see Rom 1:26-28 and 1 Cor 6:9-10).
Beloved, the word of God and all that it teaches is tested, tried and true. We serve the Ancient of Days who is the same yesterday, today and forever. Our God is not fad driven nor subject to the whims of fickle humanity. It is we that must conform ourselves to Him and not the other way around. While I will agree that their are new approaches to delivering the message (we now have print, microphones, air conditioned houses of worship, television, radio and the internet), the message does not change. Let us seek the old and good path and walk in it.
Rejoicing in the Lord,
Lee

The Value of "Church"-12/28/2011 (rp)
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." Isa 2:3
It has been said that church (organized corporate worship) is fading into irrelevance. Today there are so many distractions that take away from our coming together. People are choosing social media to connect. Many stay at home and watch televangelists, citing no need to go to a house of worship. Then there are those that consider the Christian lifestyle and the belief in Jesus Christ as too restrictive and tend toward a more open "spirituality." Finally, there are those who do not believe at all. These are the folks you see playing golf, going to the gym, tailgating at professional sporting events, etc., on your way to worship.
Somewhere along the way we have forgotten (or turned our backs on) the importance of worship. There was a time when this was the center of our lives. Our social, spiritual and even physical needs were met via the gathering of ourselves together. The church was with whom we communed while communing with God.
Beloved, there is no substitute for our corporate worship: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." Heb 10:23-25. Let us always endeavor to meet together and learn of our God and then share what we have learned with all whom we meet.

Proximity Warning-11/8/2011
"Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinning greatly against the Lord." Gen 13:13
It is now as it was then that we live in a wicked world. One need scarcely cast a glance to see that the effects of sin are all around us. It is piped into our homes via the television and the internet. It is broadcast into our ears via the radio and popular music. Our eyes are assaulted by morally impure billboards and magazine covers. None of us need go looking for its evidences. It is all around us.
So it was in Lot's time. You will recall that at the time it became necessary for he and his uncle Abraham to part ways, Lot was given a choice. He chose the lush and fertile plains and "pitched his tent near Sodom." Chapter 19 finds him sitting at the gates of and ostensibly living in the city itself. It was already well known what type of place this was yet he evidently chose to live there.
Beloved we must be aware of our proximity to wickedness. Often times we watch certain movies or television shows, listen to certain radio programs and read certain books and maintain certain relationships that are not in keeping with what is best for our spiritual development. We tell ourselves that we are mature enough, strong enough and discerning enough to glean from them without becoming subject to them. 2 Cor 6:14 asks, "What fellowship does light have with darkness?" What would we be missing from our lives if we rejected and eliminated the unholy and the impure from our lives?
Lot began his life in close proximity to God. By the end of his life, he had lost his possesions during the destruction of the city, his wife, who could not distance herself from her past and he unknowingly fathered children by his wicked and incestuous daughters. From these children came the Moabites who then became enemies of God's people. These are ample enough reasons to watch your proximity to wickedness.

GPS-10/10/2011
"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
We live in a choice driven world. Everyone seems to want to either blaze their own trail and go their own way or chose from a plethora of trails to get to a common destination. We seek to distinguish ourselves by being different than the next person. For this reason standards become diluted. Whereas this human trait may be responsible for many of the advances we have achieved, when it comes to salvation, there has only ever been one way.
Beloved, Jesus is the doorway through which we must enter in order to gain our heavenly home. He emphatically states in Jn 14:6, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man comes to the Father except through me." Though we change, the Way does not. The Hebrew writer offers, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." The standard has been established and is accessible to everyone who chooses to follow Him. Many will espouse different ways to reach paradise but make no mistake, the only road map, established by God, gives one route and one route only. Let us follow the ultimate GPS (God Positioning System) and share the directions with others.

It's What You Do-9/15/2011 (rp)
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." James 1:22
If there is anything in the world that is easy to claim, it is certainly belief in God. In fact, a recent poll revealed that fully 92% of Americans believe in God or some higher power. Further, 83% of Americans claim to be Christians.
The question must be asked, however, that if that is so, why is this country in the shape that it is in? Violent crime is rampant, sin and debauchery are present at every echelon of society, same sex marriage is being legalized and God is being legislated out of our lives. More to the point, consider our own individual lives. What is it that we Christians see in the mirror every time we remove our public masks and gaze upon it?
Make no mistake, Jesus has already spoken about this: "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter." Matt 7:21 My beloved, it is not about what we claim, it is all about what we do.

Are You Ready-9/1/2011
"And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut." Matt 27:10
Foundational to our Christian belief is that we serve a risen Lord who has promised to come back for us one day, John 14:2-3. What has not been promised is that we would know when. According to Mark 13:32, this information is given neither to man, angels or even the Son, but remains with the Father.
There are numerous scriptures that discuss the return of Christ. Many of them feature phrases like, "in the twinkling of an eye," "as a thief in the night," and "suddenly." Since no one knows neither the date nor the time, the very best thing we can do is to be ready for his return at all times. As outlined in the parable of the 10 virgins, 5 were properly prepared and 5 were not. They who find themselves scrambling to get ready and get right when the Lord arrives will find that it will be too late. Those who are leading faithful lives, Rev 2:10, will find themselves recipients of the promises of the Lord.
We all understand the challenges to leading righteous lives in these perilous times however; we must cast our eyes back to all that has been suffered on our behalf and forward to all that has been prepared. Our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed in us.
Jesus said, "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh." Matt 24:44. Are you ready?

Be Careful-8/3/2011
“The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" Matt 6:22-23
What indeed is clarity of the eye? It is submitted to you that it is at least a twofold consideration. First, it is pure way of looking at things. It is approaching what is observed without preconceived notions or questionable motives. For instance, some will look at a beggar at an intersection and think that he or she is a huckster trying to take advantage of the general public, while others will just see the need. Secondly, clarity (and purity) involve avoiding that which is detrimental to the relationship with God. An example of this is the all to ready access to pornographic and other immoral material via satellite, cable and the Internet. One need not even seek it in that it often shows up as spam in our email.
Beloved, we must, to the best of our ability, control what we take in through our eyes and other senses. Unrighteousness is as insidious as sugar ants that seem to somehow get in to your home and start showing up everywhere from the kitchen to the bedroom. It takes diligence and discipline to avoid that which is popularly accepted by the masses. Failure to do so desensitizes us and will ultimately lead to rationalizing behaviors that we previously would have considered just plain wrong.
Once our eyes become compromised, so does everything within us. We were once in darkness but shown the light. Should we return to that darkness, the shades are infinitely deeper and the effect of the light is significantly diminished, tragically at times, so much so that we do not allow our darkness to be overcome. Perhaps it is best said in the truncated lyrics of a famous children's song:
"Be careful little eyes what you see
Be careful little ears what you hear
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful..."

The Unpopularity of the Faith (Part III)-7/15/2011
"These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up." Deut 6:6-7
There are unfortunately many times when the unpopularity of the faith finds its most significant expression among our own children. As we teach our kids everything they know about life, from their first steps and words, to avoiding electrical sockets and hot irons to looking both ways when the cross the street, to how to deal with heartbreak, we spend a significant part of our lives preparing them to live theirs. Naturally when we attend worship, we bring them along, send them to their classes, take them to vacation bible school and work side by side with them on church work days or visiting the sick.
Somewhere along the way, however, the world intrudes into this idyllic existence. They discover that there are people out there that are their age that do not necessarily share the same beliefs with which they were raised. They discover that there is music out there that attracts them despite their questionable lyrics. There is alcohol, cigarettes, coarse language, drugs, sex and homosexuality. And because their friends and what those friends think is cool becomes more and more important in their lives, an erosion of everything we have tried to teach them about God and righteousness begins to erode. It is then when the kids begin to question the existence of God, not because He is not real, but because in their minds, He stands against everything that has become increasingly important to them.
Beloved, many parents are experiencing these very things every day. Some even try home schooling in order to limit outside influences but have found that Satan is pervasive, persistent and patient. There are three things we must remember. First, give your children the best biblical and spiritual foundation possible. Ensure that they develop their own relationship with God and that He is much or more a part of their reality as your love for them. From this they will never depart. Second, guard them as much as you can. Watch TV, listen to music, read books and pursue other entertainment and activities with them while teaching them what is acceptable and good and what is not. Third, understand that the world will break in. Just remember your own youth and the first time you tried ________. It is absolutely inevitable. And lastly, stay with your child through their mistakes and experimentation. The purpose is not to approve what they do, but to love them. Constantly encourage them toward the faith and constantly remind them of the spiritual and biblical lessons with which they were raised. Remind them that God is and that He loves them and that you do to.
Heartbreak is an unavoidable hazard of parenting, but we can mitigate the loss of our children to Satan by following these steps. Certainly others involve seeking the counsel of your trusted clergyman, fellowshipping with other parents and families and always, always, always seeking the Lord in prayer. Our children are truly under attack. Let us protect them with the same vigor that we always have against all threats. God will help.

If Not Us, Who?-6/30/2011
"...contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." Jude 3-4
It should be no secret to anyone that Christianity is under attack. In fact the tradition of attacking our beliefs and our Savior has existed since he walked the earth, John 15:18-19. We have been told numerous times in scripture to expect this.
Most of us lead comfortable lives that are free from what we consider persecution. We have come to enjoy and rely on God's blessings so much that we have become complacent as a body of believers.
Prayer has been taken away from our children in school and we did not prevent it. The concept of marriage being limited to a man and a woman as it is in scripture is being set on its ear, state by state, day by day and we hide behind political correctness. During a time of tragedy when a gospel preacher was killed by his wife, the church was vilified by Nancy Grace who referred to us as a cult. We grumbled but watched. There are even efforts to have "In God We Trust" taken off of the currency and "one nation under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance though we are a nation built on a foundation of faith. In fact, NBC edited out that portion of the Pledge as recited by some children during a recent national broadcast. If we are not diligent, it will all happen.
We must contend for the faith. We must stand up for what we believe in. Proof that the enemy is alive, well and active is all around us. We must remain vigilant. We must remain engaged. We must not allow ourselves to be pushed back into the catacombs where we would be forced to practice our beliefs in secret. We must protect the faith and advance the boundaries of the Kingdom.
If not us, who?

The Futility of Accumulation-6/23/2011
"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold." Prov 22:1
This bit of wisdom is counter to the conspicuous consumption norms we see in society today. We judge and are judged by the type of cars we drive, the watches we wear and the addresses we maintain. But to what end?
Beloved, the Christian's main priority is to be in possession of the grace and mercy of God. Should we feel the need to be judged by man, let it be that we are blameless, children of the Almighty, disciples of Christ and lovers of all mankind. If there is anything we boast, let it be the love of the Lord.
It has been said that one never sees a U-Haul following a hearse. Likewise, it is not the things that we accumulate in this life that will follow us into eternity, but our manner of living that will determine our eternity.

The Remnant-DD 5/2/2011
"And He said, "I will not destroy it on account of the ten." Gen 18:32
During a visit from God Himself, Abraham learned that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were to be destroyed due to the wickedness of their inhabitants. Abraham, moved with compassion for his fellow man, not to mention to his nephew living there, besought the Lord about his willingness to turn from his wrath. He asked the Lord if He would spare the towns if there were 50 righteous, then 45, then 40 and so on down to 10. Each time, the Lord agreed to spare the towns, ultimately, even for the sake of just 10 righteous individuals.
Beloved, our God is kind and loving. He would have all men to be saved. He is longsuffering with us and offers His grace and mercy generously. Though the whole world was clothed in unrighteousness, Noah and is family found favor with God and through them, mankind was saved.
Look at the world around us today. Idolatry, sins of the flesh, crime, violence, debauchery and the like surround us and infiltrate us like a virus. People are leaving the church in record numbers and others are avoiding it like never before. Yet this is the world that he foresaw and the world to which he sent His son to die. He sent him out of his great love for us and His unwillingness to see His ultimate creation ultimately fail.
To be sure, heaven and earth will indeed pass away but as with both Noah's and Lot's families, there will be a remnant. Will you be among their number? God has given us provision. Let us be found among the saved.

The Discipline of Godliness-DD 4/28/2011
"On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." 1 Tim 4:7-8
Today, seemingly more than at any other time in history, we are about self, conspicuous consumption and indulging as many desires as possible. We emulate those highly paid athletes, actors and entertainers who parade across our television screens and magazines in the latest fashions, most expensive cars and jewels and clothing that one percent of the population can afford.
Perhaps more to the point, we, in our daily lives, give in to all kinds of whims, be it substance or food abuse, law breaking (such as habitually exceeding posted speed limits), pornography and coarse language. To be sure, we are holy on Sunday, but during the rest of the week a different person can be readily seen.
Beloved, the apostle Paul once said, "All things are lawful for me but not all things are expedient." Though he most assuredly was not referring to sinful or illegal behavior, the point is made that everything that might be good to us is not good for us. In fact, we need to employ a great deal of discipline to avoid allowing ourselves to do and have things just because we can.
We are called to be a godly people. We must avoid the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life in order to maintain our friendship with God. Just as doing a little exercise and pushing back from the table some will help us lead healthier physical lives, avoiding that which leads to sin provides healthier spiritual lives. Failure to do so can have eternal consequences.
