Give Us This Day-DD 6/21/2010

"Give us this day our daily bread." Matt 6:11

During his sermon on the mount, Jesus gives his disciples a model for prayer. Many commentators have written about the aspects of this model and much can be said about it. For instance, it is important to acknowledge the Father and His holiness ("hallowed be thy name") and render Him due praise. It is also important to pledge our obedience to Him while acknowledging Him as the Master of all ("thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven").

Jesus then turns to the expression of need. As human beings, we clearly need sustenance. We are to express this need to Him, not because He does not know, but because we need to know and acknowledge from whom our blessings come. In the days when the children of God spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness, it was He who provided them with daily bread in the form of manna from heaven. This was bread they could not create, grow, nor attain for themselves. It was the gift of God. He has also given man the ability to work and produce bread. Regardless of the methodology, the source is the same.

Beloved, Jesus has said, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst." John 6:35. It is he who feeds our souls through his love and through the word. So whether you feel that this passage has to do with physical food or food for the soul, you are correct. The fact is that we need both each day and that we should request it of our loving Father.

In Revival,

Lee
